For gas manufacturers, air is a raw material from which its constituent gases, oxygen, nitrogen, argon and other rare gases can be extracted in pure form. The constituents of air are used in many industrial processes and ensure that these processes are more environmentally friendly. Air is thus a source for many environmental applications.

The air is drawn in large compressors for compression. The gas mixture is cooled until its liquid stage in heat exchangers. This occurs at extremely low temperatures of up to negative 196 degrees. Since the individual air components vaporize at different temperatures, they can be separated in tall separation columns and extracted in their pure form.
